Ah, Paris – the city of love, light, and… let’s be honest, some of the most tantalizing watering holes in the world. As an American who recently spent a semester living in the 9th arrondissement and studying in the heart of Le Marais, I’ve had the pleasure of discovering Paris’ pub scene firsthand. And let me tell you, it’s a veritable wonderland of chic cocktail bars, cozy neighborhood haunts, and downright cheeky joints that’ll have you feeling like a true Parisian in no time.
Nightlife: Where the Locals (and Lively Expats) Hang Out
Now, when it comes to nightlife in Paris, the options can feel a bit overwhelming. Do you go for the bustling Latin Quarter, with its American-focused bars and top 40 hits? Or do you venture off the beaten path to find those hidden gems loved by the locals? Well, my fellow pub aficionados, allow me to share my personal recommendations.
If you’re in the mood for a more low-key, conversational vibe, I’d suggest starting your night at Le Château d’Eau. This beloved local café always has a lively crowd and great music, making it the perfect spot to meet up with friends and get the night started. From there, you can amble down Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, popping into whichever bar catches your eye – maybe Le Mauri 7, which has a bit more of a dancey vibe, or La Mano, which often features live music and DJs.
But if you’re in the mood for something a little more… shall we say, cheeky? Then you’ll want to head over to the Bastille neighborhood and check out Fréquence Bar. This place has got the best music in town – think funky, soulful tunes that’ll have you dancing the night away. Just be warned, the drinks can be a bit pricey, but trust me, it’s worth it.
And if you really want to get in touch with your mischievous side, you’ll have to seek out the elusive Moonshiner – a speakeasy hidden in the back of a pizza joint. It’s the kind of place that’ll make you feel like you’re part of some exclusive, underground club. Just don’t forget to order a slice while you’re there!
Dining: From Street Food Staples to High-End Gastronomy
Now, let’s talk about the real reason we all come to Paris: the food. Whether you’re on a student’s budget or ready to splurge on a Michelin-starred meal, this city has got you covered.
For the most authentic (and budget-friendly) Parisian experience, you can’t go wrong with the falafel joints on Rue des Rosiers. Both L’As du Fallafel and Mi-Va-Mi serve up some of the most mind-blowingly delicious falafel sandwiches you’ll ever taste. And if you’re in the mood for some authentic Vietnamese cuisine, be sure to check out Song Heng and Sauvers d’Asie – both of which serve up some of the best pho and vermicelli in the city.
But if you’re feeling a little more adventurous (and your wallet can handle it), then you’ll definitely want to check out some of Paris’ high-end dining options. One of my personal favorites was Le Chateaubriand – a stunning 9-11 course meal for just 80 euros. And if you’re a cheese lover, you simply can’t miss Chez Michel and their legendary cheese board.
But no matter where you end up, be sure to make a pit stop at the Bastille Market on Sundays and Thursdays. This bustling open-air market is the perfect place to pick up some fresh produce, charcuterie, and, of course, a baguette or two for your next picnic in the park.
Exploring Paris’ Cultural Gems
Of course, no trip to Paris would be complete without immersing yourself in the city’s rich cultural heritage. And thanks to the fact that most national museums are free for EU students, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to do just that.
Start your cultural journey at the Rodin Museum, where you can wander through the stunning gardens and marvel at the master’s timeless sculptures. From there, make your way to the iconic Musée d’Orsay, housed in a former train station, and the world-famous Louvre.
But if you’re craving something a little more off-the-beaten-path, I’d highly recommend checking out the Jeu de Paume – a stunning gallery dedicated to photography and multimedia art. And if you’re willing to splurge a bit, the Louis Vuitton Foundation is an absolute must-see, with its breathtaking architecture and world-class exhibitions.
And when you need a break from all that cultural immersion, be sure to explore some of Paris’ most beautiful green spaces. Buttes Chaumont Park is a personal favorite, with its dramatic cliffs, lush gardens, and stunning views of the city. Or if you’re in the mood for something a little more serene, head to the Bois de Vincennes and rent a pedal boat for an unforgettable afternoon on the water.
Finding the Perfect Soundtrack to Your Parisian Adventure
No Parisian adventure would be complete without a healthy dose of live music. And lucky for us, this city is positively bursting with incredible venues that cater to every musical taste.
If you’re a jazz aficionado, be sure to check out 38 Riv – the cheapest place I found to catch live jazz shows in the city. And for a more eclectic, world music-inspired vibe, head to New Morning.
But if you’re really looking to immerse yourself in the local music scene, you’ll want to seek out the city’s best record stores. Superfly Records is a personal favorite, with its vast selection of soul, jazz, and African music. And for a more high-end, curated experience, be sure to check out Listen and Betinos Records.
