Stepping Into a Warm Welcome
As I pushed open the narrow door along Damen Avenue in Bucktown, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. But the moment I crossed the threshold, I was enveloped in a sense of warmth and hospitality that’s rarely found in a brand-new bar. Perhaps it was the friendly smiles of the staff or the inviting ambiance, but Truce, this recently-opened cocktail haven, had already won me over.
The space itself is intimate and cozy, with a minimalist design that feels both intentional and welcoming. There’s no pretense here – just a genuine desire to make visitors feel at home. And as I settled into a comfortable seat, I couldn’t help but wonder, what sort of cocktail magic is about to unfold?
Mastering the Art of the Cocktail
The brains behind Truce are a dynamic duo – David Mor, the mastermind behind the drink menu, and Rami Ezzat, who oversees the hospitality side of things. Their combined experience, honed at spots like The Up and Under Pub, Robert et Fils, and Bavettes, has clearly paid off.
As I perused the menu, I was struck by the sheer breadth of options. From classic cocktails with a twist to truly innovative concoctions, Truce seems to have something for every palate. But the real showstopper, in my opinion, is the triple chai daiquiri.
“Mor is using Zubair Mohajir’s masala chai recipe in his triple chai daiquiri,” the bartender explained, “a viscous concoction made with Mount Gay rum.” I couldn’t resist – the combination of rich, fragrant chai and the smooth, warm rum was an absolute delight.
But Truce isn’t just about the fancy drinks. The bartenders here are masters of their craft, and they’re more than happy to guide you through the menu, offering suggestions that might surprise and delight. When I mentioned my aversion to the notoriously bitter Malört, they suggested I try the RBF – a bright and sweet concoction that retains just a hint of that signature flavor.
“Making Malört would strip the spirit of its essence,” the bartender explained, “but Truce celebrates various cocktail cultures, including Chicago’s.”
A Morning Pick-Me-Up, Afternoon Indulgence
One of the things that sets Truce apart is its dedication to the morning crowd as well. From 8 am to 3 pm daily, this cozy spot serves up coffee from Valparaiso, Indiana-based Yaggy Road Roasting Company. And it’s not just your average cup of joe – they’ve got latte-like drinks that are available throughout the day for those who prefer a non-alcoholic pick-me-up.
“There are small bites like bagels and overnight oats too,” the bartender mentioned, “so you can come in for a quick breakfast or settle in for a leisurely morning with a book and a coffee.”
As the day wears on, Truce transforms into a hub for cocktail enthusiasts, with the menu expanding to showcase Mor’s creative flair. But the welcoming atmosphere remains the same, making it the perfect spot for an afternoon indulgence or a lively evening out.
A Celebration of Cocktail Cultures
What I love most about Truce is the way it embraces the diverse cocktail landscape of Chicago. From the dive bar-inspired RBF to the sophisticated triple chai daiquiri, the menu is a celebration of the city’s rich drinking culture.
“Truce is also open in the mornings with coffee from Valparaiso Indiana-based Yaggy Road Roasting Company,” the bartender told me. “It’s the base for several latte-like drinks which are also available later in the day for folks who don’t want to drink alcohol.”
And the owners’ commitment to supporting independent businesses extends beyond the bar itself. Mor is a partner in Zubair Mohajir’s upcoming Mexican-Indian restaurant, Mirra, which is set to open just around the corner from Truce this summer.
It’s this sense of community and collaboration that really sets Truce apart. They’re not just serving up incredible cocktails – they’re supporting the local food and beverage scene, and that’s something I can truly get behind.
A Warm Welcome, Every Time
As I made my way back out onto Damen Avenue, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement for what the future holds for Truce. This isn’t just a bar – it’s a destination, a place where cocktail lovers, coffee enthusiasts, and anyone in search of a warm and welcoming atmosphere can come together.
“Stepping into the narrow space along Damen Avenue, visitors will find a unique warmth rarely seen at a bar open for only a few weeks,” the bartender had told me. And they were right – from the moment I walked through the door, I felt like I was part of the Truce family.
So if you’re in the mood for an innovative cocktail, a cozy morning pick-me-up, or just a place to relax and soak in the vibrant energy of Bucktown, make your way to Truce. I promise, you’ll be greeted with a warm welcome every time.
